Godert Walter
For almost 80 years, the Godert Walter bookstore has been a household name in the city of Groningen. Richly stocked in the following areas: literature, German, English, French, philosophy, history, social sciences, nature and science, architecture, design, and Groningana.
Since July ’22, we also welcome you to our branch in the Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat, no. 10 – Walter’s Bookshop. With an expanding English-language collection in the fields of literature, poetry, design, science, nature, and history. Additionally, a selection of new Dutch remainder books, postcards, and posters.
The namesake Godert Walter was only 33 years old. On September 17, 1944, he was visited at home by the SD and shot dead for selling illegal books in his young bookstore. These included books by de Bezige Bij, illegally printed by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman.
The bookstore was continued by his young widow. From 1954 to 1977, Dick Heij owned the shop, followed by Erik and Hanneke Kweksilber. In 2014, the bookstore was transferred to the current owners.
We look forward to meeting you - among the books - in one of our shops!
Allard Steenbergen and Erwin de Vries
